London Lions Captain, Joe Ikhinmwin makes it six straight seasons after the club confirms his return once more.
Fan favourite Ikhinmwin joined the Lions in 2013 and has been an ever present since and will line up once again at the Copper Box Arena. This past season the London native led the Lions to second place in the League and a place in the Playoff Finals at the O2 Arena.
Joe averaged just under 7 points a game on 50% shooting from the floor and 35% from the three point line, and who can forget his massive three that kept the Lions alive against the Worcester Wolves in the sensational overtime game on the way to the Championship Game.
Lion’s Head Coach, Vince Macaulay commented on the London-born forward, “I think Joe brings special qualities on and off the floor, he understands what it means to play in London and works hard with his team mates to drive that ethos, on the floor he will do whatever is necessary in any position to help us win, most importantly the fans know he gives all to the cause.” Ikhinmwin spent four years at South Carolina State University where he averaged six points and three boards in his final two years before graduating in 2012.
A season with the Newcastle Eagles in 2012, then saw him sign for his hometown club. Joe was delighted to not only be back but to help get the club to silverware. “It’s a great honour to be returning to the Lions for my 6th season with the club. We did well last season despite setbacks along the way, but we fell one short on our aims, this year we will do whatever it takes to get over the line and I can’t wait to get started”.
Ikhinmwin is a key force for driving what the Lions are doing in the London community. Helping to improve the local areas as well as raising awareness and promoting basketball to the next generation of athletes .
Watch out for more player signings coming this week, the Lions will start pre-season on the 4th of September before fans get to see them for the first time at the Essex Classic at Brentwood Leisure Centre on the 8th and 9th of September then the season tips off at the Copper Box, on the 21st of September when the Glasgow Rocks are the visitors.
