London Lions 92-82 DBL Sharks Sheffield (17-26, 38-39, 60-61, 76-76)
London Lions extended their lead at the top of the BBL Championship after outlasting DBL Sharks Sheffield in an overtime thriller.
The Lions complete a double-winning weekend at home to move to 11-2 as they end the Sharks’ eight-game win streak in the league.
The Lions had a slow start to the game as they allowed their visitors to show why they have won 8 games in a row since the Lions defeated them in Sheffield in October.
Chris Alexander and Rob Marsden doing the early damage as the Sharks took the first quarter, 17-26.
Jerelle Okoro off the bench and Jordan Spencer got things moving before Ladarius Tabb hit 4 in a row as the Lions rallied. Another score from Okoro and we were in a one possession game. The same player was fouled, making one of two to close the deficit to a single point at the half, 38-39.
Sharks’ Leslie Smith hit two threes to open the third quarter before the Lions bench, this time, Andre Lockhart and Paul Guede hit some much-needed scores. Dirk Williams was playing out of his skin for Sheffield and the home side did well to just have the one-point deficit, 60-61 going into the final quarter.
The Lions did move ahead in the fourth, as Okoro’s three and two Robinson free throws made it 70-64 with 5 minutes to play. Alexander hit for the visitors but the hot shooting of Williams kept the Sharks in contention as he hit 7 points including his late three to force overtime.
Guede’s defence on Williams became key, he allowed just the one basket for the free scoring forward as from 82-82, the home side put together a closing 10-0 run to take the win.
Key stat – The Sharks gave up a total of 21 turnovers allowing their opponents 27 points including some key scores in the extra period.
Game hero(es) – Another double-double on the weekend for Tabb after posting 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Robinson who had no turnovers just missed out after handing out nine assists to go with 22 points and Guede had 13 with a huge three and defensive steal in overtime.
The two teams will clash again on Sunday at the Copper Box, this time in the BBL Trophy.
