BBL Cup, Group 3
Leicester Riders 97-76 London Lions  (26-11, 53-31, 75-49)

Morningside Arena, 15 Nov 2020

Leicester Riders capped off an impressive weekend with a well-deserved win against the visiting London Lions. A double-double performance from William Lee with 18 points and 13 rebounds as well as a superb performance from Conner Washington with 20, meant the Lions fell to their third loss in the group. The result pushes Riders to joint first place in Group 3, alongside rivals Newcastle.

The Lions fired blanks in the first quarter as the home side rattled off 26 points. Of the 26 possessions the Lions had, they could only score on five of them. This coupled with some quick fast break action from the hosts meant the deficit was 15 points at 26-11 at the quarter break.

Things didn’t improve for Vince Macaulay’s men as shots wouldn’t fall and their hosts were benefitting from free throws in the bonus. The Lions were able to find 20 points in the quarter due to good work from DeAndre Liggins and Chris Tawiah, but 27 from the Riders showed a 53-31 half time lead.

A nightmare shooting performance from Justin Robinson at 1/9 wasn’t helped by misses from Kevin Ware too, so they couldn’t make inroads into the Riders lead. 75-49 going into the final quarter.

Technical fouls on Liggins and Coach Macaulay slowed progress but Dirk Williams found his range and good defence from Andre Lockhart and Jules Dang Akodo allowed the visitors to narrow the gap to 15 points before two late three pointers for Leicester ended the game.

Williams led the Lions with 20 points and 7 assists, whilst Liggins chipped in with 14, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Lions now travel to the Newcastle Eagles on Friday the 20th for the next game in the round before returning home on the 22nd to face the Riders..
