Worcester Wolves 63-71 London Lions (14-20, 35-40, 50-60)
London Lions maintained their lead at the top of the BBL Championship with victory on the road against Worcester Wolves.
The Lions are now 8-1 with the bottom-placed Wolves dropping to 1-9, despite 24 points and 18 rebounds from Deshawn Freeman ahead of Sunday’s BBL Cup clash.
The Lions had moved ahead early in the game despite an unsportsmanlike foul called on Brandon Peel. Andre Lockhart doubled the Lions lead with a late three to end the opening quarter 14-20.
Jerelle Okoro exploded in the second hitting three from behind the arc whilst Freeman showing his energy kept the home side in touch as they narrowed the deficit to five points, 35-40 at half time.
The Lions had a good start to the third quarter as Kervin Bristol delivered a hammer dunk off a Justin Robinson assist. Foul trouble meant Ladarius Tabb sat a lot of the time so we didn’t see too much from him. The Wolves however struggled to find ways past the Lions’ defence as they were held to just 29% shooting from the field.
In the fourth Freeman tired for the home side whilst Lockhart and Flo Larkai continued to keep the scores moving before a second unsportsmanlike on Peel saw him ejected. Coach Macaulay blooded 17 year old Aaron Badibo at the end and despite a late Wolves flurry the Lions took the win and remained at the top of the Championship table.
Robinson top scored with 17 points and added seven rebounds in the win, while Okoro played a key role with 16 points off the bench with Ladarius Tabb picking up early fouls and limited to 14 minutes.
After Saturday’s rest day, both teams meet again at the Copper Box in the BBL Cup Quarter-Final. Tip off will be 4pm.
