London Lions v London City Royals
Details: Friday 14th December,
7:30pm, Copper Box Arena, London.
Last meeting: First ever meeting.
Summary: The Lions currently sit top of the League with a 9-2 record, whilst the new boys on the block come in with a 5-3 record good for 6th position.
This eagerly awaited first London derby will see the most amount of British players on a BBL floor for well over a decade. 20 players, are English and in the Lions’ line up all their British players hail from London.
The Royals did have three US Americans in their line up but they have not played in the last three games. A 3-3 start for them was improved with back to back victories over Newcastle and Glasgow.
London City Royals; The Royals have built their core around British players. Rather like the Lions, the team brought in Matthew Bryan to lead that call which has been answered by other British players, notably former Lion, Orlan Jackman and former GB player, Ashley Hamilton. Hamilton is having his first taste of BBL basketball whilst Bryant has previously played for the Lions.
Bryan’s 20.5 points per game leads the Crystal Palace based team though Hamilton dropped 24 last weekend in his debut after returning from a wrist injury. The addition of Jules Dang-Akodo has brought a little better cohesion to the team at the point guard position.
Head Coach; Coach Junior Williams is in his first Head Coaching role in the BBL, though he has done the role in Division One with Westminster Warriors. Williams has played for the Lions in Milton Keynes and in London whilst also spending a couple of seasons as assistant here at the Copper Box.
Last Time Out; This is the first time the two teams will meet.
One To Watch; Matthew Bryan-Amaning is the marquee player for the Royals. A former teammate of Justin Robinson as a junior, Bryant attended College in the US and had a very successful career before professional stints in Europe, Japan, Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico.
What They Say: Coach Williams; We will pay particular attention to Justin Robinson whom we know well, without Justin they don’t have a team”.
Did You Know; Matthew Bryan Amaning attended college at Washington, the Huskies, alongside Isaiah Thomas, currently at the Denver Nuggets and formerly with the LA Lakers and Boston.
Season record: Lions 0-0 Royals all comps
