London, Sunday 5 April - The London Lions secured the Super League Basketball Championship title in emphatic fashion, defeating second-placed Cheshire Phoenix 99-79 to seal a historic treble with five games remaining.
The victory moves the Lions to 22–5 on the season, an unassailable lead at the top of the table with no team able to catch them, and keeps them on target for a rare quadruple with the playoffs title the last to capture.
“(Winning the Championship) It’s good recognition but we still got 5 games left," Head Coach Tautvydas Sabonis said after the game.
"We have to stay focused it doesn’t change anything with our approach, we have bigger goals. We won, it so happens to be that we seal the number 1 seed but we still have 5 more games to prepare for the playoffs.”
In a clash between the league’s top two, London asserted control through a dominant third quarter, outscoring Cheshire 30-16 to break the game open and put one hand firmly on the title.
Leading 47-40 at the half, the Lions came out of the break with purpose. Tarik Phillip score 10 points and had an assist in a 90 second blitz, while the Lions’ defensive intensity forced turnovers and limited Cheshire’s rhythm, stretching the lead beyond 20 points.
From there, London never looked back.
Tarik Phillip led the way with 16 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, while Kameron McGusty added 16 points off the bench. Shavar Reynolds contributed 14 points, and Aaryn Rai chipped in 12 as the Lions showcased their depth with 45 bench points.
Cheshire were led by Jaxon Brenchley’s 20 points, with Frankie Policelli adding 14 and Tobias Cameron 13, but they were unable to recover from the Lions’ third-quarter blitz.
London’s control was reflected across the board, shooting 51% from the field compared to Cheshire’s 38%, while also dominating inside with 50 points in the paint.
The final minutes were a formality, with the Lions leading by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter before closing out a 20-point victory.
The win continues a remarkable campaign for London, completing the treble for the second time, also being the last team to do it in the top flight during the 2022-23 season.
Lions will now travel to Bristol on Friday as they look to stay sharp to round out the regular season with five games remaining and prepare for the playoffs.
