London, Friday 27 March — The London Lions pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 77–57 victory over the Bristol Flyers at the Copper Box Arena, using a dominant defensive finish to turn a tight contest into a convincing win.
After leading by 11 at halftime, London saw their advantage erased in the third quarter before responding emphatically, outscoring Bristol 27–9 in the final period to close out the game in style.
Aaryn Rai led the Lions with an outstanding all-around performance of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Tarik Phillip also added 15 points. Shavar Reynolds Jr. contributed 14 points, and Deane Williams chipped in 11, as London once again leaned on balanced production across the lineup.
Head Coach Tautvydas Sabonis praised his team’s response late in the game.
“I want to congratulate my guys on an amazing fourth quarter,” Sabonis said. “I thought we did a great first half, holding them to 23 points. Offensively we weren’t that good but defensively we were amazing. The third quarter happens, and I just don’t understand why we need to do that, but then we cap it with an amazing fourth quarter, allowing only nine points.”
The Lions started steadily, finding early rhythm through interior scoring from Joel Scott and strong playmaking from Reynolds. Rai provided an early spark, scoring back-to-back baskets to help London build a lead, while Phillip added a key steal and finish in transition to give the Lions an 18–12 advantage after the first quarter.
London continued to control the game in the second period. Contributions came across the roster, with Morayo Soluade knocking down a three and Williams impacting both inside and out.
The Lions’ defence remained strong, limiting Bristol’s scoring opportunities and taking a 34–23 lead into halftime, with nine different players already on the scoresheet.
“We’re a defensive-minded team, that’s what we pride ourselves on,” Rai said. “We come in and play hard defence, but I think what we’re still working on is being consistent for the full 40 minutes.”
The third quarter saw Bristol fight back.
Led by Jonathan Brown’s aggressive scoring, the Flyers chipped away at the deficit, drawing fouls and capitalising from the free-throw line. Despite a key four-point play from Phillip and timely baskets from Rai, Bristol closed the gap and briefly tied the game late in the quarter before Reynolds knocked down a tough pull-up jumper to give London a narrow 50–48 lead heading into the fourth.
The Lions responded with their best stretch of the night.
Reynolds and Rai sparked the offence early in the quarter, while Phillip added a crucial three to extend the lead. A decisive 18–5 run, highlighted by strong defensive stops and efficient ball movement, broke the game open. A lob from Phillip to Williams brought the crowd to its feet, as London pushed the lead into double digits and never looked back.
“When you play great defence, the offence is always rewarded,” Sabonis added, as the Lions’ defensive intensity overwhelmed Bristol down the stretch.
London’s ability to lock in defensively and share scoring responsibility once again proved the difference, as they closed out a comfortable 77–57 win.
The Lions remain atop the SLB Championship standings at 20–5, continuing their strong push toward the playoffs with momentum building at the right time.
London return to action next Friday at the Copper Box Arena, where they will face Caledonia as they look to continue their dominant run in league play.
