Chemnitz, Germany – Wednesday, 22 October 2025 – The London Lions edged NINERS Chemnitz 68–67 in a tense EuroCup thriller on Wednesday night, snapping the German side’s unbeaten home streak and securing a crucial second win of the season in Group B.Leading by 12 in the third quarter, Lions allowed Chemnitz a furious fourth quarter rally, with the home side taking the lead in the final minute before a pair of Deane Williams free throws sealed the victory following a contentious call at the other end. After the game, Lions Head Coach Tautvydas Sabonis reflected on the resilience and defensive grit from his team after their third-quarter lead nearly slipped away.
“I don’t want to become the Santa Claus team where we give a lot of gifts, but my guys showed resilience, fought back and got the win. We left them at 67 points at home where they are an 87-point team, and that shows our character defensively - which is the way to win and compete by defense, so I am very happy for my guys.”
He also praised the competitiveness of both sides.
“It was a thrilling win down to the wire. Both teams competed hard today.”
Kameron McGusty led the Lions with 20 points, four rebounds, and six assists, while Joel Scott added 14 points and four rebounds. Tarik Phillip was a steadying force on both ends, finishing with eight points and a game-high +18 plus/minus - the highest of any player on the floor - as his defensive energy and leadership kept London composed through Chemnitz’s second-half runs.
For the hosts, Kevin Yebo posted 17 points and 9 rebounds, and Nelly Sibande added 11 points and 3 assists, but the NINERS’ 5-for-27 (18.5%) shooting from beyond the arc proved decisive in a one-possession defeat.
On the final possession, Davis tried to drive inside, but Deane Williams stepped in to take a crucial charge with 4.6 seconds remaining. Initially ruled as an offensive foul, the play was overturned to be a common foul assigned from the shot attempt by Davis, because he had already released the shot having no control of the ball.
With the NINERS in the bonus, this awarded Williams two free throws. The Lions forward calmly sank both shots to seal the victory and end Chemnitz’s undefeated home run.
London finished shooting 57.1% on two-pointers and 23.8% from deep, while Chemnitz held a 68% mark inside the arc but couldn’t convert from long range. Both sides grabbed 33 rebounds and tallied double-digit assists, but London’s discipline and defensive execution in the closing minute made the difference.
The win lifts the Lions to 2–2 in EuroCup Group B, giving them valuable momentum before returning to domestic action.
London remain unbeaten in Super League Basketball play and will look to extend that run this weekend when they travel north to face the Caledonia Gladiators.
