We are London’s professional basketball club. The men’s team plays in Super League Basketball and the EuroCup at the Copper Box Arena in Stratford; the women’s team plays at NCC Hackney. Off the court, our ambition is to build the biggest community basketball programme in the country — and we are at the start of that work, not the end of it.
The club was founded in 1977 in Hemel Hempstead, and spent its first three decades moving around the edges of the capital — Hemel, Watford, then Milton Keynes. In 2012 it moved into London and took the name it has now.
Since 2013 home has been the Copper Box Arena on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park — a building put up for the 2012 Games and now one of the best places to watch indoor sport in the country. In August 2024 the club was acquired by Tesonet, and today operates as BC London Lions Limited.
What has not changed in fifty years is the basic idea: a basketball club that belongs to the place it plays in. That is why the community programme is not a side project. It is the reason the rest of it exists.
Champions of Super League Basketball in 2024/25 and 2025/26, and British champions three times before that. In 2023/24 the Lions reached the EuroCup semi-finals — the furthest any British club has gone in the competition.
The women's side began life in 2008 as Barking Abbey, becoming Barking Abbey Crusaders in 2014 and joining forces with the Lions in 2017. It has carried the London Lions name outright since 2020, and in that time has been champion of the women's league three times — 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2023/24 — with four straight play-off titles from 2021 to 2024. In 2024 it won the EuroCup Women, becoming the first British basketball team to win a European title. Home games are at NCC Hackney, close enough to the floor to hear every call.
Our ambition is simple and specific: every child in London within fifteen minutes of a London Lions basketball session.
Weekly junior sessions across London, grouped into North, East, South and West, open to complete beginners.
We go into schools across the capital, from assemblies and taster sessions through to sustained programmes with a school’s own staff.
A route from a first session in a local sports hall through to the academy, and from there into the professional game or the workforce around it.
We work with partners across London on this, including the University of Westminster and New City College.
