Sheffield, Saturday 7 March - The London Lions slipped to a 79-73 road defeat against the Sheffield Sharks on Friday night, moving to 15-5 on the season but remaining top of the Super League Basketball Championship table.
Nigel Hawkins and Joel Scott led the Lions with 16 points apiece, while Chaundee Brown added 11 and Aaryn Rai contributed nine off the bench.Nick Kern Jr led the way for Sheffield with 19 points, while Dirk Williams, William Lee and Prentiss Nixon all added 13 for the hosts in a balanced scoring effort.
Sheffield started the stronger of the two sides, establishing control early in the opening quarter behind the scoring of Nick Kern Jr and Dirk Williams. The Sharks found rhythm offensively and closed the first period ahead 25–18.
London responded well in the second quarter. Hawkins sparked the Lions with efficient perimeter scoring while Scott provided a presence inside, helping the visitors settle into the game. A strong defensive stretch allowed the Lions to swing the momentum and outscore Sheffield 22–14 in the period to edge ahead 40–39 at halftime.
The hosts regained control after the break. Sheffield tightened up defensively and used a key stretch midway through the third quarter to create separation, capitalising on several Lions turnovers and converting in transition. London managed just 11 points in the period as the Sharks built a 58–51 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Lions battled back down the stretch, with Brown and Rai hitting timely baskets to keep the deficit within reach. However, Sheffield held firm in the closing minutes, converting from the free throw line and executing late possessions to secure the six-point win.
London will look to bounce back quickly when they return home to face Surrey at the Copper Box Arena on Wednesday 11 March, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30pm.
