The London Lions are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former assistant coach David Lavinier, a cherished member of our organisation and one of the most beloved figures in British basketball.

David served as assistant coach with the London Lions women’s team from 2020 to 2023, playing an instrumental role in one of the most successful periods in club history. In his first season, he helped guide the team to victory in both the WBBL Trophy and WBBL Play-Offs. Over the following two years, he was part of the coaching staff that achieved back-to-back clean sweeps of all four major titles - the WBBL Championship, Cup, Trophy, and Play-Offs - an unprecedented run that saw the Lions lift 10 trophies during his tenure.

Beyond his time on the bench, David continued to support the organisation in recent seasons, lending his voice and insight as part of the London Lions men’s commentary team, where he could share his passion for the game and infectious enthusiasm.

Off the court, David’s influence across British basketball was immense. As the founder of Eastside Eagles Basketball Club, he dedicated years to growing the game at grassroots level, inspiring young players through community coaching across East London. A former England junior international, he also made a lasting impact as a mentor and coach to countless athletes who credit him for their development both on and off the court.

Reflecting on his passing, London Lions Women’s General Manager, Ruchae Walton, said:

“Dave was a beloved member of our community, and a true champion both on and off the court. As a coach, he didn’t just teach basketball - he uplifted everyone around him. He had a unique ability to connect with people, to make them feel valued, motivated, and part of his family. His positivity and warmth were infectious, and his impact extended far beyond the game itself.

“His dedication was unmatched; helping lead our club to 10 championships is a testament to his commitment and professionalism, but more importantly, to the love and care he put into every player he worked with.

"Dave will always be remembered as the heart of our programme - a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family during this difficult time.

"Rest in peace, ‘Father Dave’. We will miss you deeply, and your memory and influence will live on in all of our hearts.””

David was a true gentleman who lit up every room he walked into - a friend, mentor, and role model whose legacy will continue to shape British basketball for years to come.

The entire London Lions family extends its deepest condolences to his wife Jude, children Nicholle and Andre, and everyone mourning his loss.
